THS VRAM (EMULOGIC)
THS VRAM is a new interpretation of the arcade pixel Emulogic font. Back in 2004, I converted Emulogic to TrueType from a Windows Bitmap font (.FON) created by CK! [Freaky Fonts], www.freakyfonts.de.
Since CK! has completely disappeared from the web; the license for using the original Emulogic font is not 100% clear. I have therefore decided to create an entirely new interpretation of the original, including additional characters, wide language support, with a license that covers free commercial use for Apps, Games, Websites, Print.
THS VRAM — a pixel font and new interpretation of the Emulogic font. Free for commercial use.
HISTORY
The old Emulogic font is based on a font called 'The Atari Font' or 'Namco Font'. It was originally created around 1976 for the arcade games Sprint 2 and Cannonball. According to Toshi Omagari's book Arcade Game Typography: The Art of Pixel Type, 2019, it may have been created by Lyle Rains. The font was used in over 200 games, including Gee Bee, Quiz Show, Bomb Bee, Missile Command, Galaxian, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
THS VRAM is a completely new interpretation of the original, which dates back to 1976. It is not an exact copy. It’s an entirely new design. The letters are now more harmonious and attractive, and the width and weight of some letters have been adjusted to improve the overall appearance.
This font now supports Western, Central and South Eastern European languages, with around 422 characters (compared to 76 in the original). To achieve a sharp, pixel-perfect display on screens, use sizes of 7 pixels (or multiples thereof: 14, 21, 28, etc.).
Use a line height of at least 11 points.
The original font is based on a 7x7 pixel grid, making it monospaced. Thanks to new operating system technologies, such as font kerning, this technical limitation, which was due to the technology of the time, has been removed. Therefore, THS VRAM is not a monospaced font. Bear this in mind. The font is now fully kerned, as was not common during that time period.
There is an alternative—normalized 'I'. Access it via the OpenType features in your graphics program.
Numbers also have perfect spacing and kerning. However, if you need tabular figures, such as those seen in old-style arcades, please activate the corresponding OpenType feature.
